Postal Service

Postal services are slow in China and Tsetang, Gyantse and Shigatse and within each of these town. Lhasa Hotel, Tibet hotel offers IDD communications, fax and telex services.

There are telephone services between Lhasa and Tsetang, Gyantse and Shigatse and within each of these town. Lhasa hotel, Tibet hotel offers IDD communications, fax and telex services.

Media

All newspapers are printed in Tibetan or Chinese and there are no foreign publications available. Chinese television presents a short news programme in English at 10 P.M. every evening. If you carry a short-wave radio, you can listen to BBC and VOA.

Electricity

Electricity is 220V, 50 cycles AC. Plugs come in at least four designs: three pronged angled pins (like in Australia ) three-pronged round pins (like in Hong Kong ), two flat pins (US style but without the ground wire) or two narrow round pins (European style), and three rectangular pins (British style).

Internet service

It is possible to send and receive emails in Lhasa , Shigatse, Tsetang, Ali and Chamdo, either in private Internet bars (which double as video arcades) or in the business centers of China Telecom offices. Most places charge around Y5 for an hour's Internet access.

Some websites (e.g. those of the BBC and Dalai Lama) have been blacklisted by the Chinese government and are unavailable inside China .
