Antiques:

Customs main concern is preventing the export of antique works of art - with good reason since Nepal has a great many treasures, many kept under conditions of very light security. It would be a great shame if international art thieves and 'collectors' forced more of it to be kept under lock and key. Unfortunately a lucrative international market has led to the theft of a staggering amount of irreplaceable art.

It is very unlikely that Souvenirs sold to travelers will be antique (despite the claims of the vendors), but if there is any doubt, they should be cleared and a certificate obtained from the Department of Archaeology in the National Archives building on Ram Shah Path. These controls also apply to the export of precious and semiprecious stones.

The painting depicts scenes of domestic rituals with religious offerings to gods and goddesses to ward off evil.
